Review of God's Pocket (2014) by Nathan M — 14 Sep 2014
Featuring a strong cast and an interesting visual tone, God's Pocket is a bland story about a bland town. I think director John Slattery was trying to go for a Coen Brothers type feel for this film, even casting John Turturro in one of the lead roles.
However, the film's quirky characters don't capture that melancholy snarkiness that the Coen Brothers' characters do, instead they just come off as dull. The strong cast all aren't given enough to work with, and so their performances just come off as average, barely servicing the script.
It's sad that this will be one of Hoffman's last on screen performances, because it isn't worthy of his time.
