Review of God's Pocket (2014) by Eric H — 27 Oct 2014
God's Pocket now has the distinction of being one of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's final performances before his death earlier this year. Along with that, it is John Slattery's debut as a director and a cast filled with names like John Turturro, Christina Hendricks, and Richard Jenkins, how could this end up being bad? Well, this movie isn't bad, but it isn't necessarily great either.
I do believe the lack of focus and humor to make the dark material work really weakens the film that otherwise has solid performances. GOD'S POCKET delivers visceral violence in a beautifully shot movie with fine performances from its ensemble cast and that"s it.
