Review of God's Pocket (2014) by Ian G — 20 Dec 2014
In what is one of Phillip Seymore Hoffman's final screen performances before his untimely death earlier this year, he plays one of the blue collared cons in the small town of God's Pocket who seems to be the perpetual screw up in life and work, and seems to be continually going downhill after the death of his son while on the job.
Even though this project seems to have collected a bevy of actors towards this piece from Hoffman, Tuturro, Hendricks and Jenkins, the film still struggles with the ever weird tone whether it wants to be a tragedy, small town drama or a dark comedy of sorts which seems to add an unfortunate disconnect for the audience.
Normally wouldn't be an issue and just adds the film to the remainder bin but since it is one of the last time we will see Hoffman on screen you would wish for something a little grander here.
