Review of Trolls (2016) by Ian G — 24 Dec 2016
Trolls has been one of those Dreamworks films that they seem to have been working on a while as they have been acquired by one studio after another, and has come through mainly fine if unoriginal. The story follows two factions of trolls like critters, one insanely group of colorful happy Trolls convienently styled after the Trolls dolls of the 80's to capture that nostalgia factor of audiences who love to sign and dance and be Merry, and the more cynical Trolls of the still family friendly yet LOTR inspired variety who rely on a holiday they made called Trollstice where they get to eat as many Trolls as they want to secure their "happiness" otherwise they are just dull and depressed the remainder of the time.
And of course the message of the films is the basic you are responsible for the creation of your own happiness as the colors fly by on the screen to give you a sugar encrusted hi and Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake sign you mainly covers of pre existing songs of yesteryear (with the true standout being True Colors which was released over the summer) and one JT track he wrote for his latest album.
All in all it is strictly an ok animated entry with relies more on familarity and by the numbers story telling as opposed to going out on a limb with anything but fortunately stays away from the trappings of the Croods and several other animated films of late of uninteresting animation and not a lot of heart.
Average escapism of the family variety to the movie theatres this winter.
