Review of Gods of Egypt (2016) by Simon C — 21 Jun 2016
I just saw Gods of Egypt, and it was completely and totally awesome. I loved the heck out of that movie. It was cute, and funny, and spectacular, with all the best elements of Wuxia.
It's basically what you get when Alex Proyas looks at the two recent Titans movies (Clash of the Titans (2010), and Wrath of the Titans (2012)) and says to himself "You guys just don't get Harryhausen! You want Harryhausen? Here's a freakin' love story to it".
... and then he took it, and made a modern day version that's pitch perfect.
Delightful.
The biggest critique I have (I'll let the CGI feeling a bit off in places slide - it needed Rayleigh-Mie scattering for the night scenes to sell them, I think, but once you're past that it doesn't matter) is that the editing is too Western. It needed the Jackie-Chan style overlapping cut, instead of a hard cut on the action. As a result in all of the business going on, it's hard to keep track of what's happening at times.
