Review of God's Country (2022) by Kevinchon — 15 Oct 2022
Apparently hunters kill baby deer and love to laugh about it and have a beer over it. What reason would they have for killing a deer with a few pounds of usable meat on it and spending hours cleaning it.
No one does that. Then apparently its commonplace for rural men to band together to burn down the house of a woman for stealing said corpse of juvenile deer. What a load of garbage. Yet another movie that displayed rural hunters/"scary rednecks" in a very negative light for no apparent reason.
The only interesting dynamic in the movie was with the cop - but then that had zero payoff. I wanted to like this movie but there was ultimately nothing there but a shallow message about identity politics and rednecks are bad.
I didn't like this movie because it was objectively a mess with a lack of direction. A movie with great dynamics between BIPOC, women's struggles with violence, police, and rural life that is actually worth checking out is Wind River (2017).
Leave this behind.
