Review of Gods and Generals (2003) by Tyler L — 11 Jun 2007
As a Civil War buff, I can appreciate this film as a fairly accurate film. Most civil war movie portray the Confederates as cold blooded and heartless, and in this film it portrays both sides in favorable lights, in the attempt to be fair. If anything, all we saw in this film is that both North and South, were feuding brothers both fighting for their principles and beliefs. The historical consultant on this film was one of, if not the best Civil War historian in Dr. James "Bud" Robertson of Virginia Tech, giving the film more historical crediblity. It is long, and drawn out, but if you dont see it, you will miss true drama. Such as during the battle of Fredricksburg, when the Irish Brigade went head on with the Georgia Irish Volunteers, symbolizing the agony each felt in fighting this war, and brought the term "Brother V.S Brother" to the screen.
As well Robert Duvall gives a Oscar calibur performance as Robert E. Lee. Looking so much like the Confederate General it is amazing.
Long, and if you are not a Civil war person, maybe this isnt for you, but it's worth a look if you are.
