Review of Gods and Generals (2003) by Josh H — 05 Nov 2007
Let me introduce a seemingly controversial proposition: most of the men who fought for the Confederacy were good and decent people, who loved their homes, their families, and God. This film succeeds in making that point.
Granted, this film is long (but not as long as the superior "Gettysburg"). And, yes, there is a lot of speachifying. But, I think the dialog and its delivery gives this film a grandiose, bombastic charm that is missing in today's gritty urban dramas.
The performance by Stephen Lang as General Stonewall Jackson was Oscar-caliber. The battles were impressively staged. Not quite as well-done as the masterpiece, "Gettysburg," this film still deserves a place in the library of every student of the War Between the States.
