Review of God Bless America (2012) by Emmanuel S — 01 Sep 2012
God Bless America is a scathing commentary on American "popular culture" and the general populace that eats it up and keeps driving it forward. While I agree with a lot of the points of view of the film, I did find it to be a bit preachy and lacking a lot of laughs for a film classified as a comedy.
Yes, the message is a bit heavy handed, but I truly did enjoy the perspective and think it is something that needs to be said to a country where more people vote for the winner of American Idol than the leader of their country.
Performances are good and the leads have an effective amount of charisma. The story is light and more could have been done there, but it isn't too lacking to be effective. God Bless America is light on the laughs and heavy on the social commentary, but it is an enjoyable and perhaps sobering journey.
Recommended for those that are tired of the direction that the world is heading and want to see someone act out what they are thinking. I particularily enjoyed the scene in the movie theatre, although I think it would have been more effective had I seen this prior to the recent shooting in Colorado.
Definately thought of that watching the scene. Enjoyable film, but did leave some room for improvement.
