This is a movie that tells a really interesting story but lacks the "flash" that other war movies may have. it has the typical cross-section of characters but it does a better job and presenting the wrong-headedness of the usa's conducting of the war.
it's set in the same time period that john wayne's pro-war "the green berets" was set but plainly confronts the futility of fighting what was essentially a civil war that resulted after colonial power france tried to fight its way back into the area after WW2 and lost.
