Review of Glorious 39 (2009) by Andy W — 10 Jul 2010
An unexpected conspiracy-driven drama from Stephen Poliakoff, featuring an excellent lead performance from Romola Garai. The rest of the cast do well with what they're given (mostly 1930's cliche stock characters), and whilst the film is mostly enjoyable, there's a sense of glossy thinness from the usually more deep and meaningful Poliakoff.
Its one of those 'don't think too deeply or else you'll see it for what it really is' movies - it does have some interesting things to say (namely Britain's lesser reported reluctance to oppose Hitler), but things do get a bit silly towards the end.
The film is also bookended by a completely unnecessary modern-day setting, which only serves a rather weak "ha-ha" ending. Fans of mystery will like this, but there's an overall feeling of "Why was this made for the cinema when it would have been just as good on the tv?".
