Review of Character (1997) by Sajib K — 02 Mar 2009
(Warning: slight SPOILER ahead). Character is a film with first-rate storytelling. What I'm growing to love about European cinema is the great trust and respect that it (usually) shows to its audience.
Plots are engaging, character development is just sufficient enough to grab one's attention, and much is left to the imagination. In Character, for example, we don't really know why young Katadreuffe's mother is the way she is (it's simply her character) or why his father does what he does or doesn't do what he could do (it's something in his character).
As for Katadreuffe himself, we have some idea of why he wants to be a lawyer, but we don't really get a sense for what drives him to pursue his education so tenaciously; we sense that it has something to do with his father, but even then we're not really sure.
Still, even with all these questions of "character" we aren't left missing the plot or the concluding point that it is Katadreuffe's character ("moral quality", in this use) that seals his innocence.
All told, Character is a well-crafted and engaging film worthy of one's Friday night.
