Review of Glen or Glenda (1953) by Hunter D — 25 Feb 2010
It's definitely the most personal film Ed Wood made, but it's not the kind of stuff he excelled at, which was Z-grade sci-fi trash. This movie feels like an hour-long PSA clearing up misconceptions on transvestites, which was a brave subject to tackle back in 1953.
Like all Ed Wood films, it's got horrible acting, terrible use of stock footage, hideous dialogue, and has piss-poor pacing, but the tone is charming, and it's worth seeing for Bela Lugosi's bizarre monologues alone.
It's essential viewing for the Ed Wood aficionado, and fans of trash cinema in general.
