Review of Glen or Glenda (1953) by Caleb M — 03 Jul 2009
Ed Wood's Glen or Glenda may have been ahead of its time, but that doesn't mean it isn't a repetitive messy bore. Wood has three or four different storylines going on here, from the actual Glenda/Glenda tale, to one about a WWII vet who gets his sex changed, to Bela Lugosi inexplicably raving about people and dragons.
The actual Glen or Glenda story lasts only a few minutes, and most of the film relies on voice over narration to explain the visuals. On top of it all, Wood throws in a surreal dream filled with women, devils and tranvestites that manages to be entertaining while ineffective story-wise.
