Review of Glass (2019) by Timothy E — 22 Jan 2019
â~Glassâ(TM) is a startling original take on the superhero film genre with the characteristic twists and turns of M. Night Shyamalan and a masterclass in acting from James McAvoy. I fail to understand the criticâ(TM)s derision of this film. The only faults I can identify are a presumed knowledge of Unbreakable and Split (Iâ(TM)m not kidding, you need to watch these prior to glass or you will not understand a thing) and lazy music that can feel out of touch with the scene content.

The cinematography is incredibly beautiful throughout, as is the acting from Samuel Jackson, Bruce Willis and Sarah Paulson. However, the obvious standout of Glass is James McAvoy. The incredible range of acting through the different personalities of Split is further exhibited and made all the more potent by the audiences experience of seeing McAvoy change between each personality. A 5 minute monologue near the end of the film, in which McAvoy changes personalities frequently as the â~Hordeâ(TM) fights for control is the single most skilled performance I have ever had the pleasure witnessed. If Glass is to be faulted for one thing, it is that it gave McAvoy such room to show off, he completely overshadowed the rest of the talented cast. The fact he has not received significant awards nominations for the role is a traversty. I highly recommend Glass and advise all fans of film to set aside any doubts towards Shyamalan, watch Split and Unbreakable, and enjoy an awesome movie.
