Review of Gladiator (2000) by Henry E — 15 Jan 2015
Deserving of the hype, Gladiator represents a film of epic proportions, boasting an in-form Russel Crowe and a superbly cast Joaquin Phoenix, who plays a deranged megalomaniac desperate for affection and respect.
Responsible for some powerful quotes of wisdom and defiance, the film balances the horror of the age of Roman gladiators and a politically based plot manoeuvring around episodes of deceit, risk and revenge.
Although it is labelled with a lengthy running time, I did not find myself checking my watch once - surely a good sign.
