Review of Girls Trip (2017) by Sarah B — 15 Apr 2018
My dad told me this movie was hilarious. Judging by my lack of enthusiasm for it, I guess he and I are more different than I thought. What can I say, I just didn't think it was funny. The jokes seemed really predictable.
I didn't mind that each girl was a caricature in the group and the much-lauded Tiffany Haddish definitely put a lot into her performance. I just thought everything was really over the top, like the guy with his insane reaction to the grapefruit.
I understand that it's a comedy and not supposed to be realistic, but I guess this level of sophomoric just isn't my type of humor. I think that not being black meant that I missed out on the aspects of black culture and black female friendship that were apparently celebrated in this movie, so I might've not really understood the heart of the movie for that reason.
