Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Angelo C — 23 Sep 2009
This is a classic example of a movie not living up to its premise or potential. With no real plot development to speak of, it runs documentary style as small window into a call girl's life. The narrative is so fractured and jarring that it is frusterating at times.
Even if you took all the scenes and placed them in chronological order, you'd still have a boring story in which 0 character development occurs. A plus side is the short run time, which allows to you quickly watch this and move on to better fare.
The stunt casting of Sasha Grey is both the most attractive part of this movie and also its biggest failure. After seeing her boned you obivously want to see if she can really act, only to discover her deadpan and inflictionless acting is so awkward that the movie is forced to address it head on in such a matter of fact way its sad.
The temporal setting adds nothing to the story, it just simply dates the film and enhances the terribly repetitive focus on America's economic downturn and the ensuing corporate bailouts. If the extent of your social commentary on this issue is to simply recognize that it exists, and then lazily juxtapose it against the wasteful spending of a few immoral New York yuppies, what the hell is the point of opening your mouth at all?? Skip this and go watch a Sasha Grey porno instead, at least then you'll be entertained.
