Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by Phil N — 17 Mar 2010
I listened to the hoopla surrounding this movie in the critic circles and gave it a try. I don't understand what the fuss was about. Sasha Grey's performance being 'great'? I mean, I was surprised that it didn't seem overacted like most porn star's roles in normal movies, but other than that, nothing stands out at all.
(Hell, I'm not even sure why she stands out as much as she does in porn. Even physically, she doesn't stand out more than your average pornstar.) And I won't say I didn't get the point of the movie; my problem is that I don't understand the point in making that point.
It's been done so many times, let's just let it rest. We know that call girls are actually just as lonely and insecure as their clients. Why tell your audience something they've been hit over the head with a thousand times? I'll bet homeless people are usually hungry, but why would I make that given-fact my central focus in a film?
