Review of Girlfriend Experience (2008) by J K — 24 Sep 2010

The first time in cinema history that a true porn star was able to successfully cross over into a credible and Oscar-worthy mainstream film. I give a lot of credit to director Steven Soderbergh for accomplishing something that may never be accomplished again.

Though the film isn't nearly as raunchy as I had originally imagined it would be (it's actually quite tame considering it's a film about a prostitute) it does have a good deal of cinematic merit and a great performance out of Sasha Grey whom I really think probably made a big-time mistake with her career when she first started out in porn.

Unlike 99.9999999 percent of all porn actors and actresses, Grey actually has acting talent. She should probably retire from porn because her going back to do a porno after this film would be the cinematic equivalent of Helen Mirren going back to do a Caligula sequel.

..it just won't work. A good film with good dialogue. It also exposes you to the seedy underworld of Hookers and the Johns they bed but does so in a tasteful and enlightening way, which the Academy loves.
