Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Katya R — 23 Mar 2008
A really beautiful film. Every still could be a Vermeer painting which was lovely, you keep seeing glimpses of this painting and that scene...I really enjoyed that. The whole production emersed itself in the painter's vision of the world around him.
Both Scarlett Johansson and Colin Firth were excellent, keeping their performances understated...very atmospheric but I felt that the historical details such as the dependence of the artist's family upon the Patron's finacial support and the desperate situation they would find themselves in were skipped over too quickly to properly hit home.
I'd really like to read the book now.
