Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Maija P — 30 May 2008
There was just something not there in this movie. Perhaps it just moved too slowly, or lacked a theatrical climax. I'm not sure that basing the plot solely on the jealousy of a wife is entirely advisable.
The credibility of the story itself is somewhat suspect: the most common theory is that the subject for the painting "Girl With a Pearl Earring" was actually one of Vermeer's daughters, not a servant.
Despite this, Johansson's ability to shine while filling the shoes of a servant girl is superb.
