Review of Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003) by Raymond W — 26 Aug 2008
I had high hopes for â??Girl with a Pearl Earringâ??, but, sadly, I was left disappointed in the end. I am a big fan of Scarlett Johansson, but she was just adequate in the role of a servant to a rich family in the 1700â??s.
Johansson gets a job with the previously mentioned family whose head of household is a talented painter. The painter becomes infatuated with the poor servant girl and paints her in a famous portrait. All the usual intrigue and scandal associated with these events are expected.
A lot of the acting seemed wooden. This seems to happen a lot in costume dramas. I just didnâ??t buy the relationship between Johansson and the painter. There was supposed to be this deep lust, but I just didnâ??t sense it.
It was in the script, but it didnâ??t come out on screen. The body language and delivery of lines just werenâ??t there to convince me of it.
