Review of Girl, Interrupted (1999) by Hannah M — 25 Aug 2011
There are flashes of some interesting things going on here, both visually and conceptually. Unfortunately, a few things do not quite work and the most obvious of those things is Winona Ryder. Especially in the bits of narration, she sucks the momentum out of the film. Partially, it seems to be the fault of the writing, but the bulk of the blame can be laid at the feet of her performance. Whatever acting merit this film gains from some strong supporting performances and an excellent turn as a sociopath by Angelina Jolie, it loses because of its lead.
The ending of the film is also troublesome as the final moments do not feel congruous with the rest of the work.
