Review of Girl in Progress (2012) by Jerry H — 11 Oct 2012
"Girl in Progress" is sort of like a lengthened, gender-changed version of the Biblical parable of the Prodigal Son. That may sound great, but, part of the problem is that too much of this Prodigal Daughter's evil deeds are shown onscreen.
Imagine if a movie depicted the Prodigal Son's wasteful, sinful living for about half of its running time, yet devoted only five minutes to his father welcoming him back with open arms; that would pretty much be the equivalent of this film.
For those reasons, I say that you ABSOLUTELY should not show "Girl in Progress" to ANYONE under eleven years of age. Even pre-teens and teens, depending on their maturity level, maybe shouldn't see this.
Other content concerns include profanity and some immodest outfits. Even those who do want to see this movie should only rent it; I have a feeling that I'm going to be seeing numerous copies of "Girl in Progress" on the bargain rack at MovieStop soon.
Frankly, I can only suggest this movie to older teens and adults who regularly read "young adult" novels; this is right up their alley. For most of us, though, this is worth one viewing at most.
Anyone who is looking for a wonderfully fun and entertaining teen-centric flick should check out "Spectacular!", "Harriet the Spy: Blog Wars," "Sky High," "16 Wishes," "Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam," or "To Save a Life"; those are better than "Girl in Progress" any day of the week.
