Review of Ginger & Rosa (2012) by Andrew G — 06 Aug 2013
Ginger and Rosa is a movie raging with a torrent of potential but that ultimately does not deliver. With splashes of truely brilliant filmmaking and writing, the movie is pontooned by Ella Fanning's rock solid performance.
The movie follows two young girls as the skirt their way through a few months of their early adolescence in 1962 London. Ginger's family life becomes strained just as she is burgoning into an activist, protesting the establishment of nuclear arms in the UK.
He relationship with her friend Rosa is the only thing holding her together, however when Rosa strikes up an intimate relationship with Ginger's father, a wedge is driven through the two's relationship Ginger begins to unravel.
The movie is excellent at points especially when director Sally Potter goes off script with her cinematography and editing. However the script and story leave something to be desired. Elle Fanning might be the most talented actress under 20 working today and with films like this she shines very brightly indeed.
