It's hard to find fault with the skill with which the film is made, the high quality of the performances, and the honesty and complexity of the emotional content. But I'm troubled by the essentially socially conservative notions of the story.

It seems to me there must be another way, another story to tell, about growing up with a freethinker for a father that doesn't require so many tears and hysterics.
