Review of Gimme Shelter (2013) by Gareth B — 22 Dec 2009
If ever there was a film to perfectly capture the end late 60s rock culture, "Gimme Shelter" is it. It's all about the music until the second half when everything turns shocking.
I'm a fan of the Rolling Stones music, and one would have to be to fully enjoy this documentary, but the circumstances depicted are interesting enough that even lesser fans will still find merit in the feature. The first half is rather slow which may turn some people off, but you'll be rewarded for sticking it out and staying tuned for the dramatic end.
The experience at Altamont is one that has to be seen to believe and speaks volumes not only about the rock culture but about society as a whole at that point in time. This is not only an essential part of the history of the music but of documentary and film culture as well. Go watch this immediately...
