Review of Gilda (1946) by James G — 17 Aug 2007
Classic film noir. The plot is quite hard to fathom, but ultimately it's all about Rita Hayworth's femme fatale Gilda, libido unleashed, and how men find this intoxicating but will ultimately find it threatens their ego and so treat her like a caged bird.
Psychologically it raises a lot of complex issues about sexuality, control and suppression which is what gives the film such a strong sexy current and torrid atmosphere. Put the blame on Mame, boys!
