Review of Gilda (1946) by Steve H — 31 May 2010
Gilda is a display case for Rita Hayworth. The back story is her husband is the owner of a Gambling casino, but also the head of a monopoly and wants to take over the world. Yes, that's the back story. The main story is the love triangle between Gilda, Johnny and Ballin.
Rita is stunning as Gilda Mundson/Farrell. The 3 point lighting used throughout the film makes her seem angelic and her final dancing and singing scene is stunning. Every straight man wants her after watching this film in 1946, no doubt about it. What she wears in the film is very provocative for 1946.
My Burn: The story is essentially about how much power gorgeous women have over men, NOT COOL.
Bottom Line: For those who were around when Rita was the pin-up girl of the WWII era, this is a nostalgic look back, for everyone else, she's just another pretty face in a time when you can find all that and much more on the internet, not necessarily worth the watch.
