Review of Gilda (1946) by John H — 03 Jul 2012
Has any star dominated a film the way Rita Hayworth does with GILDA? As soon as she pops into the frame, both film and audience are hypnotized by her intense, sultry presence. As her and Glenn Ford do a charged Argentinian tango of love and hate, desire & repulsion, the film develops a power to intoxicate.
But this is noir, and the rise and fall - which features surprisingly complex gender and sexual politics - is arresting and disturbing... or at least it is until the tacked-on, too convenient happy ending.
