Review of Gilda (1946) by Clayton W — 08 Feb 2011
Gilda is a classic example of old-school Hollywood at its glamorous best. The story is engaging, weaving political elements into its central love story in the vein of Casablanca. The stars are gorgeous and engaging, especially Rita Hayworth as the titular temptress with an unruly sense of fun.
The film manages to pack a few twists to break up the fairly straightforward narrative, and the final moments complicate the inevitable happy ending with the right notes of menace and danger, making the film more than the sum of its impressive parts.
