Review of Gigi (1958) by Kim P — 31 May 2007
Leslie Caron was horrible and melodramatic as usual and you could tell all her songs were dubbed by someone that could actually sing. She could easily have destroyed the entire film. It is a tribute to the great Maurice Chevalier that he saved it.
Chevalier was absolutely flawless and his "Thank Heaven for Little Girls" and "I Remember it Well" were the best numbers he had done since "Isn't it Romantic?" in Love Me Tonight.
The set designers and art directors did a great job recreating turn of the century Paris and so it was hard not to like this despite the contrived plot, but how many times do we need the lovers to reject each other and then reconsider? To echo one of the early numbers in the film.
.. "It's a Bore!".
