Review of Gigi (1958) by Gabi B — 25 Feb 2010
To quote the film: "It's a bore." Besides some great production qualities (production design, cinematography), there's not much else here. The songs are forgettable, the performances, while not bad, are not worth mentioning, I find Minnelli's direction flat, and to top it all off it's story is melodramatic romance that couldn't be more over the top.
I can't see one reason why it garnered 9 Oscars... It's hard for me to even give 3 stars out of 5. Oh and by the way, the opening and closing number, "Thank Heavens for Little Girls," is a little too pedophiliac for me.
