Review of Gifted (2017) by Joseph D — 21 Apr 2017
Ever want to see Captain America try to raise a 35 year old woman who's trapped in a 7 year old body? Well now ya can! Presenting...
GIFTED.
Ok, ok, it's a little more complex than that. The story is about an average Joe who's trying to raise a 7 year old girl who not only has genius level math skills, but who has trouble connecting with her peers, due to her mental maturity, but lack of social skills.
At about an hour & 40+ minuets, the film flowed quite well, the dialog did sometimes feel a bit movie-of-the-week-ish, but nothing made me face palm, & the comedy, drama, romance, & suspense were really balanced & complementary.
The cast was great. The little girl was a delight, relatable, funny, never annoying, she felt like one of my nieces or cousins; I really hope that kid goes far in Hollywood, she'd be great in anything comedy or comedy-drama driven. The adult characters felt very natural, like they were telling a factual story, I wouldn't be a bit surprised if this film were based on actual events.
The cinematography was amazing, so many shots were set up to be living art pieces, while still maintaining a real world feel. At the very least, it's worth seeing for the visuals.
3 & 3/4 stars out've 5, the entertainment was in the human drama, you grew to care about these people, celebrated their triumphs, shared their pain, & really rooted for them when they struggled. I liked Gifted far more than I expected to, while some of the jokes might not land with younger kids, overall, it might be worth a look, come family movie night.
