Review of Gifted (2017) by Alan W — 22 Aug 2017
Marc Webb returns to his indie roots after 2 "Amazing" Spider-Man movies in this drama about a mathematically gifted girl who is also way more mature and savvy than others her age. Now living with her uncle played by Captain America Chris Evans, there is a quiet and relaxed chemistry both between the actors and their characters which is disrupted when his mother and her grandmother (Lindsay Duncan) arrived on the scene.
Avoiding predictable clichés and sentimentality for the most part, this is a decently plotted film that does the job quietly and confidently. The cast is good but the key to this film's watchability has to be McKenna Grace who plays the gifted child in question with no annoying precociousness but with a naturalistic humour and grace.
