Review of Giant (1956) by Bob V — 22 Nov 2010
One of the most successful films of all time - Warner's biggest success until Superman came along much later to be precise - and innovating in many ways. Also the third and last movie starring James Dean, who was killed before the film was completely finished, so that in parts of the movie, like his closing speech, his voice is dubbed by another actor.
"Giant" lives up to its title: giant length, giant sets, giant star wattage, giant scope, giant amount of ageing make-up. It's not quite the saucy thrill that you get from other Taylor movies like "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?", but it's definitely worth all 196 or so minutes.
