Review of Giant (1956) by Kim B — 26 Jun 2018
A sweeping epic of a film-the best kind. Kinda like Gone with the Wind in Texas minus so much romance/tragedy and instead racial tensions and family ties. Liz Taylor of course radiates beauty and Dean is perfect as the rowdy cowboy type.
The second half of the film was not what I was expecting at all and threw me for a loop but was very good. *Spoiler* I though Leslie was going to have an affair and run off with Jett but in the end Leslie is able to build a family and work thro her differences with her husband.
The cinematography of Maryland and Texas is beautiful and I could relate to Leslie so much. A great female lead that's strong, not afraid to speak her mind, and has a good heart. I must admit I was a little disappointed there was no affair love scene btw her and James Dean but honestly that wasn't what this movie was about and she wasn't meant for him-poor Jett.
Film is long but moves so fast you're not bored bc its unpredictable. Supposedly this film makes Texas look bad, but honestly it made me understand Texas more than I think Ive ever cared to. Its a good film about Texas and underscores American racial issues.
I recommend ppl from Texas watch it.
