Review of Giant (1956) by Jake P — 02 Feb 2011
An "epic" that doesn't really need to be one - by that I mean it's a bit long. I really liked james dean's performance here (reminded me of brad pitt in some of his roles), and interesting to see a very young dennis hopper in a role that's rather normal.
I guess the idea here was to show the changes texas and texans went through from the early to mid 20th century - all of which happened way before my time... and I have little interest in texas "exceptionalism".
but it did seem to deal with a pretty touchy topic - racism - for a 1950s film. not a bad movie but a little to self-conscious of itself being an "epic".
