Review of Gia (1998) by Vincent V — 11 Oct 2008
Raw. Intense. Painful. Three words to descibe this film, but there are many more. Angelina Jolie was once an actress, and she proved it in her movies. Now she's a celebrity. Jolie gets in the skin of Gia, and potray's her flawlessly.
At times it is difficult to watch, because of the truth she shows of the real Gia, a woman who's life went out of control. I wasn't watching Angelina on screen, I was watching Gia. At least that's what it felt like, as most of the time I sat with my mouth open in awe.
As Gia's struggling mother, Mercedes Ruhel is excellent also. I haven't seen her Oscar winning preformance in The Fisher King, but from watching this I can tell she deserved that Oscar. You can feel her pain and saddess more and more as the movie progresses.
