Review of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) by Jay B — 24 May 2013
GI Joe tells the story of two soldiers, Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) who join the GI Joe team, led by General Hawk (Dennis Quaid). Other members include hot red-head Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), Breaker (Said Taghmaoui), and ninja Snake Eyes (Ray Park). When an evil force called Cobra, led by Destro (Christopher Eccleston), the Baroness (Sienna Miller), ninja Storm Shadow (Byung Hung-Lee), and The Doctor (Joseph Gordon Levitt), intend to use nuclear technology to destroy the world, it's up to the Joes to save it.
The film also stars Jonathan Pryce as the President and Arnold Vosloo as Zartan, another one of the Cobra's workers.
I know for a fact that the writing in this movie is not the best. There are lots of corny dialogue, but there was some fun humor coming from Marlon Wayans, so that helped a little bit.
The acting isn't that good either, particularly from Tatum, Miller, and Eccleston. These actors all seemed miscast to me. However, I did enjoy the performances from Park, who's always good considering that he never speaks in his movies, Levitt, Quaid, Nichols, and Wayans, who shows his fun side.
But what really makes GI Joe work is the action sequences. Stephen Sommers, who knows how to make good action movies cause he made The Mummy, puts me in a good mood when I watch these sequences. They are so fun, particularly in the finale. The special effects are also decent.
While the acting is far from spectacular and the writing is cheesy, GI Joe is fun to watch for it's action sequences and it's special effects, so I'll leave it at that.
