Review of Ghoulies (1985) by Tim S — 17 May 2015
It's no surprise that one of the first Gremlins clones was not one of the best. Ghoulies was released in 1985 by Empire Pictures, Charles Bands' production company. It had a theatrical release, but eventually became a direct-to-video staple throughout the late 1980's and early 1990's with the sequels.
The first one out is not very good, but it's not terrible either. The movie isn't really about the Ghoulies at all, but about an evil sorcerer trying to come back to life by way of his son. The Ghoulies themselves are in the background and don't really contribute too much to the plot, except in the last act.
It's also funny how the marketing campaign was hung on the image of one of the Ghoulies popping up out of the toilet. It was actually a shot that was inserted after the film was finished once the marketing campaign was decided upon.
Overall, the movie is pretty cheesy most of the time, but it can be a slightly enjoyable if you give it a chance. You won't be wowed, but mildly entertained.
