Review of Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009) by Bob S — 10 May 2010
McConaughey plays Connor, a cocksure ladies man in this twist on Dickensâ?? A Christmas Carol. Something is going to give when the consummate bachelor attends his brotherâ??s wedding and, the true love of his life, Jenny (played by Garner) is in attendance.
The film is another tiresome, rehashing of the classic story which leaves it void of any anticipation. For example, a lengthy tour of the ghosts of girlfriends past comes at an inopportune time when you were just starting to enjoy Connor and Jennyâ??s present day repartees.
McConaugheyâ??s characterization and dialogue full of exaggerated come-ons save this movie to some extent by adding consistent laughs throughout. With the exception of the uncomplimentary, gum-smacking depiction of the ghost of girlfriends past by Stone, I really enjoyed the supporting cast, even a whiny Chabert, but especially Forster, Archer and DeWulf.
