Review of Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) by Compi24 — 08 Dec 2021
Though it doesn't necessarily beat the 2016 reboot by a country mile for me, the critical treatment of each film should have been flipped at the very least. If I remember anything (anything at all) from that 2016 debacle, it was the soulless, baseline "watchability" of it -- an unfortunate hallmark of too many "triple A" releases nowadays.
With Jason Reitman following in his father's footsteps though, you can very obviously track an undercurrent of respect and reverence for the original piece throughout "Afterlife." This element can sometimes persist to a bit of a fault, but the effort is mostly satisfying and even profound at times.
The pacing is a bit of a challenge for me, with the cautious, slow-growing approach not really acting as something I remember the original films possessing. Seems like this was more of a Jason Reitman touch at work.
All things considered, the end result is enjoyable, definitely making up for a lot of the wounds left by the 2016 reboot.
