Review of Ghost Ship (2002) by Michael D — 13 Aug 2010
I am overly obsessed with Scrubs, just as much, if more so, then I am with Pro wrestling. Every day whenever I am at home and have either lunch or dinner, no point looking to see what is on Cable, pointless endeavor, instead I watch Scrubs. sure I have re watched them a million times but it still beats a lot of what you see. Why am I mentioning the all great scrubs with this? well for one thing just the comparison between the two is astounding despite different difference in genres. But I was watching an episode today that perfectly describes this movie. The scene in scrubs is like this, Turk is trying to find out what gift to give to Carla to show he truly cares about her and as he goes through the list we get to chocolates. and it is Elliot's reply that I will now describe this movie.
"With a rich Cliched center?".
That's it, the movie is a clear cut, seen it once seen it a hundred times before. The eating very old baked beans then turning into maggots trick could be seen before you even watch the movie. And that is basically what you get, everything that happens or about to happen neither surprises or scares you. in fact most of it gets a nice YAWN from me, an giant Horror film lover.
Also the plot is shaky, nothing really great and some skeptical writing, in all honesty I believe I could have wrote many of the scenes, maybe the whole movie, much, much better. And whats up with the acting? some times its decent and then those same actors turn it into mediocre, non consistent acting is more painful then watching mediocre all the way through. but Acting never plays into a rating for me, seeing as a horror fan acting is never important, just surprises and twists.
A Cliched, Predictable, bad acted horror film with a very poorly written plot. why did it even grace 40%? well simple, despite predictability it does provide average entertainment and that is what 40% is, average entertainment. it may have been able to get up to 50% but I feel I have been to generous with my scoring and I believe I should start deducting 10% so I feel less biased, unless it is Saw or Scream.
So that's it, decent movie, worth a watch. nothing ground breaking and no "wow" effects come into play. But I wouldn't pass it off as mediocre due to some fairly decent CGI work on the ship and a reasonable budget that comes into play compared to other horror films, Ice Spiders for one.
