Review of Ghost Ship (2002) by Michelle F — 27 Apr 2009
The idea of a film based on a ghost ship sounds interesting, I wished the film managed to follow through.
The opening of the film gets off great with the slicing wire, then from that point the film is a mixture of good and bad, then plunges into rubbish once the flashback starts. The flashback was meant to reveal to us what exactly happened, and was meant to reveal a dark twist, however, mainly due to Julianna Margulies bad acting, you get so bored by the time the twist is revealled you don't really care. The flashback was also plunged into down right rediculous when everyone started betraying everyone.
As mentioned Julianna Margulies was terrible, like the female lead of 'Alien vs. Predator' you just wanted to punch her in the face, whilst almost everyone else was the same. Desmond Harrington was good as simple-minded Ferriman, but was then rubbish towards the end, whilst the great acting talents of Karl Urban and Isaiah Washington were greatly underused. The best acting talent came from Emily Browning, who played Katie Harwood.
The effects however were great, the film was just let down by poor acting and plot holes (e.g. how the Hell did Maureen (Julianna Margulies) know what the little girl (Emily Browning) was called?).
An entertaining film if you can bare the poor acting.
