Review of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) by Griffin B — 04 Aug 2013
The way a Ghost Rider film should be. Pulp-comic awesomeness (inspired by equally trashy fun things like Heavy Metal and the actual Ghost Rider comic books) that strikes a dark tone but isn't meant to be taken too seriously.
Wonderfully directed (and loaded with laughs, campy exploitative-ness, and borderline psychedelia) by the directing duo of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, who made the brilliant action-parody Crank series, and sufficiently hammed-up by Nicholas Cage and Idris Elba (who steals nearly every scene he's in), this movie will appeal to the Spawn-loving, Pantera-obsessed teenager in you.
Although it's never quite allowed to be as satirical or self-aware as the Crank films, and therefore can't quite reach their level of greatness.
