Review of Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance (2011) by Hunter P — 20 Oct 2012
I'm going to say that I really liked the first Ghost Rider movie for good acting, light-hearted scenes, and a pretty cool villian. Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is not even close to a good sequel compared to the first one. Right off the bat I'm going to say their is a couple things I did like more than the first one. The special effects in the CG and even the burning look better. They look a little cheesy in the first one and look grittier and scarier than than the first one. The Ghost Rider is much more scary than the first and the movie is more of a brainless action/horror movie this time around. The Ghost Rider is a monster ready to kill anybody at anytime. Thats kind of how it should be. The hench-men would get killed like nothing in the first movie and in this one some of them do but one does make for a good fight scene.
What isn't good? About everything else. They have the ridiculous shakey cam and up close action which dosn't help the film. I didn't like the devil in this film. He was too powerless and gets taken out way too easy. The hench-man guy who, gets turned into a being of decay, was really interesting to me and had some of the funny moments of the movie. I like how Johnny tries to get rid of The Rider but, when he has to get it back to save the day, he gets it back to easy. Some of the human characters were people I don't care for or about. When The Rider uses his chain whip, he kills people really easy. What's the point in using the pennant stare then? It takes him forever do kill somebody with that. The Rider also seems a little to weak and dumb compared to the last one. I don't mean to compare it to it's predocesor but it's hard not too with all the differences.
I like the action scene when The Rider goes to kill all those people who are working for the devil. Speaking of the devil, heres what he does this movie. He turns people into his workers and when the main guy dies he uses his powers to make him the Lord of Decay or something. Then his face gets burned and s apperently weaker or something. He wants to get his hands on a child for some reason I don't know. The kid has something to do with The Rider that can control when he breaks out or not. When The Rider tries to kill his mother, without Johnny's control, the kid makes him stop somehow. Johnny gets rid of The Rider and when all seems lost the kid spits out a bunch of fire onto his face and he's The Rider again. They breifly say the kid is the devil's son so maybe they don't want Johnny to be a rider anymore. Thats all I've got for that.
I don't really get whats going on most of the time. I don't like how Cage plays Johnny anymore. He's completely crazy and no longer calm and collected. The female lead is generic but she isn't a love interest so I'm good with her. The main things I like is The Rider and Decay-guy because they're cool to me. I like how the Decay-guy gets used to his powers in a very comedic scene. He turns people into stone and completely kills everything with a touch. He tries to eat bread and it deacys while he tries to eat it. The one stereotypical black guy is very annoying but I like when he gets touched by the Decay-guy his head tirns to stone and he head0-buts him making his head explode knowing he was going to die anyway.
The conlusion to my review is that this movie is most definitley bad. I think it gets a little but more hate it should and they don't acknowledge the things they made better from the first one. I would go as far as to say that it's so bad it's good. Don't recomend at all but should be rented at least once if you like brainless action/horror movies.
