As a fan who has watched every Ghost in the Shell movie and TV episode, I guess I'm in the minority when I express a positive review for this movie. As for the whitewashing issue, Mokoto Kusanagi has blue or purple eyes, depending on the episode.
There are exactly zero Japanese people with blue or purple eyes. Would it have been better for Hollywood's reputation if they cast a Japanese actress and made her wear blue eye contacts? At any rate, yes, the storytelling might be a bit bumpy, but what happens to The Major is interesting, and engaging.
Go see it.
