Review of Ghost in the Shell (2017) by Peteyjayjay — 06 Apr 2017
I was expecting a typical dumb blockbuster and was pleasantly surprised by Ghost in the Shell. They clearly put some thought into the film and took care to honour the original material while also changing the plot enough so it isn't just a retelling of the original movie.
The Major's character is well fleshed out as is the cyborg antagonist. The same can't be said for the supporting characters who are all pretty one dimensional, I feel more time was needed to flesh out their personalities.
Aramaki especially was bordering on being interesting with some great scenes, he should have been utilised more. Besides one typical blockbuster defying logic in a scene near the end the action overall was extremely well shot and visually interesting.
I also believe the white washing controversy actually effected the critical ratings GITS received which isn't very fair.
